PBI Colombia is made up of four sub-teams in different areas (Bogota, Barrancabermeja, Medellin and Uraba) but works as a single team. Work plans are shared and decisions and actions are taken together.

Each regional sub-team performs its regular accompaniment/observation work along with a whole range of public relations and the lobbying of civil and military authorities, as well as different NGOs, the church, international organisations and the diplomatic corps.

As it is the capital, the first PBI Colombia team began in Bogota. Aside from the important political work carried out in this city by volunteers from different national and international organisations, the team conducts weekly visits to accompanied organisations and travels with them throughout their displacement to other areas of the country.

The Bogota Team covers areas such as Arauca, Cauca, Valle de Cauca, Tolima, the Atlantic Coast and Casnare.

With its headquarters in the city of Barrancabermeja on the banks of the river Magdalena, this sub-team deals with the city as well as a large part of the main municipalities in the region (which are spread throughout the departments of Santander, Bolivar, Antioquia, among others). We also make regular trips to Bucaramanga.

The armed conflict is very intense in this area and it is in this context that PBI carries out its work as observers accompanying human rights and displacement-related NGOs who work in the area.

Based in Medellín the team accompanies various NGOs in the metropolitan area as well as in the rural areas of Antioqueño.

With headquarters in Turbo/Apartadó this sub-team accompanies NGOs and communities of displaced people, such as the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó (Antoiquia) and CAVIDA, Communities for Self-Determination, Life, and Dignity in the Cacarica River Basin (Bajo Atrato, Chocó).

PBI volunteers in this area also have to work in the context of open armed conflict, above all accompanying NGOs and communities of displaced people.

What they say
"... I am more aware than ever of the great role you have played and the work you do in my country where everyday horror is greater than fiction, just as I am convinced that I owe my life to you and that of my family too..."

Osiris Bayter, ex-President of the Regional Corporation for the Defence of Human Rights [CREDHOS], Barrancabermeja, Colombia
